Prof Yang Liu

Prof Liu’s research primarily focuses on linking microbial ecology to engineering bioreactor development, optimization, and implementation. She has a specific interest in optimizing biological wastewater and waste treatment processes, resource recovery (C, N, P), and GHG reduction. This includes high-rate anaerobic processes for bioenergy recovery (managing biomass and agricultural wastes) and energy-efficient aerobic/anoxic processes for N and P reduction and recovery. Prof Liu and her team have extensively worked on selecting and enriching functional microbiomes in mixed communities treating raw waste and wastewaters, supported by omics analysis. Over the years, Prof Liu and her team have developed several new technologies tailored for treating municipal, agricultural, and industrial waste and wastewaters. Some of these innovations have been successfully demonstrated at large pilot/full scale in Canada.
